Had a day free during the time there . Finished all our preparation work and the plant startup was still a few days away. So my colleague and I went to Kaohsiung which is about 1.5 hour from Mailiao. Took the bullet train...my..it was impressive!! Hitting top speed of about 280km/hr. As good as the shinkansen in Japan. Managed to catch some pictures of the station and the train.
Went to the newest shopping mall in Kaohsiung (supposedly also the largest in Taiwan) called Dream Mall. Very huge and have 9 levels of shops. The mall's design is pretty impressive too...but too bad I'm not much of a shopping person....Denise would probably appreciate it better if she was there.
Then, had a short trip to Cijin Island which is about 10 minutes ferry from downtown Kaohsiung. It's an old historic town with an old 17th century fort and nice panoramic scenery. There's even a black sand beach. Took a picture of it from far but my camera battery went flat when I reached the beach. This place is pretty much a town unspoiled by foreign tourists; most of the people there are locals. A good place to explore if you are in southern Taiwan. More pics:
It was a nice break but it was back to Mailiao that evening.
